Hong Kong, Day 3

Long day at the office today.  Mom managed to get her act together to catch the tour to see Big Buddha.  Sadly, it poured.  Additionally, she forgot to charge her camera and only got a few pics before it went dead.  Probably not the most fruitful day for her.

I actually read the fine print when I signed up for network access in my room and I thoroughly enjoyed the legalese:

Hong Kong, Day 2

Nothing terribly exciting today.    I got up, had breakfast at the hotel with Mom and went off to meet the Kung-Fu Factory guys in their office.  Mom was supposed to go see the Big Buddha, but apparently an hour to get ready and have breakfast isn’t enough.  She’s going to give it another go on Thursday. I came home that evening and we went to the mall.  Mom had bought me a watch there during the day and we went back to the shop to get the band properly sized.  We stopped in a resturant there called “The Spaghetti House” for dinner and I ordered the “Sausage, Mushroom in Cream” meal.  Not surprisingly, the sausage was actually cut up hot dogs.  After my time in Seoul, I was expecting that sort of thing.  I once ordered a pizza there and it had no tomato sauce on it and the sausage bits were hot dogs, cut lengthwise.   In general if you want ethnic food, eat it in the country of origin.  That being said, I had Scezuan for lunch.  It was really tasty…  at least I think it was.  It’s hard to tell when your tongue goes numb.

I woke up around 5:00 this morning.  Not much in way of sleep, but the beds here are just like Korea.  Comfortable if you are tired and good for sleeping but once you wake up, they are uncomfortably firm and you can’t just dig in and go back to sleep.  Now *I’m* the one who wants to fall asleep.    Apparently my Mother didn’t get enough, either.  It’s now 11:30 and nap time for her.

Yea, there’s a body under there.  It may seem that there is a theme to my posts.  There isn’t, really.  It just turns out that I blog when Mom goes to sleep.  I’ll pick up a cheap camera somewhere (it is Hong Kong, after all) and focus on something other than my traveling companion’s sleep patterns.

Here’s a couple of  obligatory pictures from/of our room:

It’s actually quite nice.  Switches and levers for almost everything.  Quite modern, really.   Still there is one significant issue.  The walls of the bathroom (shower, too!) are clear glass.  If that wasn’t enough, the designers decided to put mirrors in every corner.  Think it’s uncomfortable to use the facilities or shower when your mother can hear/see everything?  It’s not…  at least not compared to the other way around.  I spent a portion of the morning fixedly staring out the window and looking into other people’s rooms.  I’m not trying to peer into their bathrooms, I’m just trying very hard not to catch a glimpse of mine.

So I’m sitting here at the airport in Japan.  My Mother is wiped out.  She tried to sleep on the plane and just tossed and turned and it’s starting to catch up with her.  According to the clock on my laptop, it’s 4:23.  That would be the wee hours of the morning, EST, 3:23 CST.  It’s no wonder she’s toast.  I, being the loving son I am, took a picture of her.  We leave for Hong Kong in about an hour and a half.  I hope she doesn’t hit when I shake her awake.

The lounge is actually quite nice.  There are iMacs every few feet for the folks here to use and free wifi.  It’s nice to see an enlightened country :)

More to come, assuming I don’t pass out.  You know what the worst part of flying to Asia is?  Knowing that when you land, achey and tired, you have to do it all over again in a week or two.
